Topic: Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment with Primetimes Mike Novelli - Aultcare Sales & Client Retention Specialist
Mike Novelli, Sales and Client Retention Specialist with Aultcare Aultman

Health Matters with the Medicine Center Pharmacy. I’m your pharmacist, Paul White. We’re glad you joined us. It’s the 10th Anniversary of our Health Matters Show and the 45th Anniversary of Medicine Center Pharmacy. Now we are featuring a program about Medicare’s annual open enrollment period which begins October 15. Before we begin, I’d like to thank our sponsors, Aultman Health System, Studio Arts & Glass, and Jenior Appraisals and Liquidations. Today Brad and I are broadcasting from our administrative offices and our guest is Mike Novelli, Sales and Client Retention Specialist with Aultcare.

Medicare Open Enrollment period from October 15 thru December 7. What you may not know is that nationally, roughly 70% of Medicare patients do not review their plan during the open enrollment period. That can be scary and leave an opportunity to discover unwelcome or unwanted changes in coverage when they visit a doctor, pharmacy, or other providers in the new plan year.

Another fun fact is that Medicare Advantage Plans have become the way that most Medicare Patients are receiving their Medicare benefits. In August of 2022, 48% of Medicare beneficiaries chose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan. Advantage Plans became popular because most offer benefits that are not covered by traditional Medicare.

We are fortunate to talk with Mike Novelli, from our local five-star advantage plan, PrimeTime Health Plan.  PrimeTime is locally owned and when you call, you will be talking to a neighbor or friend to help you understand your Medicare benefits and options.

Tune in to learn more about these topics in this program:

  • What is AEP when it comes to Medicare plans?

  • What type of changes do beneficiaries make during AEP?

  • What happens if someone would miss the timeframe to change during AEP?

  • Why is it important to review plan options?

  • What is the benefit of having an Advantage plan over Original Medicare A & B?

  • Are there any disadvantages of having an Advantage plan over Original Medicare A & B?

  • What happens if the doctor is not in the network of the Advantage plan?

  • What happens if anyone is on an Advantage Plan and goes on vacation?

  • What if you have to go into the hospital while out of network?  Is that covered?

  • If I join an Advantage plan and don’t like it, am I stuck with it forever?

  • Explain prescription coverage or Part D coverage.

  • What does it mean to find medication on a formulary?

Thank you to our guest, Mike Novelli, Sales and Client Retention Specialist with Aultcare.  We’d like to remind our listeners if you suspect you have a medical issue, please contact your healthcare provider. Thanks to our sponsors, Aultman Health System, Studio Arts & Glass, and Jenior Appraisals and Liquidations. As always, we thank our listeners for joining us on Health Matters with the Medicine Center Pharmacy.

Have a healthy week and we’ll see you again next Friday right here on News Talk 1480 WHBC.

Caring for our Favorite Pets!

Health Matters is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Medicine Center Pharmacy on WHBC 1480 AM in Canton, Ohio. This episode pharmacists Brad White and Paul White discuss caring for our furry friends with Dr. Mandy Pullekins from For Paws Animal Hospital.

If you are listening to this show, you are probably a pet owner and in the United States, 70% of us are pet owners, up from 56% in 1988.  You may have heard that pet adoption spiked during the pandemic and the statistics show that was true, but primarily among households who already had a least one pet.  More of us are dog lovers than cat lovers.  The average annual spending on a pet dog is $1,200 with a little over $400 of that going towards food.  We spend significantly less on our cats for an average annual spend of $687 with $329 of that for food.

Regardless of the statistics, our pets are members of our family.  Our spending, concern and devotion to our pets is a reflection of that bond.  This morning we will talk with Dr. Pullekins about showing our pets some love and learning some tips to keep them happy and healthy!

What does an Occupational Therapist do?

Health Matters is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Medicine Center Pharmacy on WHBC 1480 AM in Canton, Ohio. This episode pharmacists Brad White and Paul White discuss occupational therapy services from the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital with Emily Winstead.

During the month of April, Occupational Therapy Month recognizes all the benefits this specialized healthcare provides, but many of us do not know what an Occupational Therapist does or how their care benefits our lives.

When injury strikes or long-term wear of joints and muscles require rehabilitation, an occupational therapist (also known as OTs) provides the necessary exercises to get us back into our daily routines. Simply getting out of bed may be a challenge or moving from one position to another becomes a problem we need to overcome. OTs have studied the movements required to make these transitions happen safely and to retrain our newly repaired body part to do the job. They know the therapies to help improve weakened muscles and alternatives when others fail us.

For every age and ability, occupational therapists provide care to improve the quality of life for each patient.  This morning we will talk with Emily about the services an Occupational Therapist provides.

Tune in to this edition of Health Matters to Learn about Occupational Therapy:

  1. What injuries or diagnoses might indicate a person needs the help of an occupational therapist and how do you evaluate those needs?

  2. How has the Covid-19 Pandemic impacted occupational therapy practice?

  3. What types of things would Occupational Therapy help with following a stroke?

  4. How does OT differ from Physical and Speech therapy and how can they complement each other?

  5. What is the purpose of Occupational Therapy following a total joint replacement?

Hearing Loss with Dr. Denise Testa

Health Matters is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Medicine Center Pharmacy on WHBC 1480 AM in Canton, Ohio. This episode pharmacists Brad White and Paul White discuss hearing loss with Dr. Denise Testa from Hear the Possibilities in Canton, Ohio.

About 48 million people, or about 15% of the population in the U.S. have some degree of hearing loss, but many of them struggle with acknowledging it. Of those 48 million people with some degree of hearing loss about 1 in 5 of them will seek treatment.  People may be embarrassed or ashamed about losing their hearing. Some see hearing loss as a sign that they're old, so they may ignore it or pretend it isn't happening.

They also might be worried about the cost of hearing aids, or the way the technology looks or functions. According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, the average American takes seven years to seek help with hearing loss.

Hearing loss has been linked to social disengagement, increased risk for dementia and other physical and emotional consequences.  In other words, a loss of hearing can put your health at risk.

Learn in our program today about:

  1. What kind of issues do you treat?

  2. Is there a link between cognitive decline and hearing loss?

  3. What is the newest technology in hearing aids?

  4. Does insurance cover hearing aids?

  5. How can ear wax affect hearing?

  6. What is the impact of headphones or earbuds on hearing loss?
