When the covid-19 pandemic hit the United States in early 2020, it felt scary – but also temporary. All these months later, we are feeling stressed, frustrated and perhaps angry that it isn’t over. On top of that, it is difficult to feel like we are getting clear, consistent information to make the best decisions about our health. This morning we are fortunate to share this time and space with Jim Adams to share the facts and current recommended guidance regarding Covid-19. We also want to thank Jim and the staff of the Canton City Public Health for their tireless efforts on behalf of the health and safety of our entire community.

Wound Care Specialist Dr. Natalie LaScola with Aultman Medical Group Podiatry and Aultman Wound Care

Health Matters is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Medicine Center Pharmacy on WHBC 1480 AM in Canton, Ohio. This episode pharmacists Brad White and Paul White discuss wound care for difficult to heal wounds with Dr. Natalie LaScola, podiatrist with Aultman Medical Group Podiatry and Aultman Wound Care.

When wounds don’t heal or are still painful despite treatment, it’s time to see a specialist. A qualified provider who deals with non-healing wounds is your best resource for questions about potential infection from a wound that isn’t healing properly.

At a wound care center, the wound will be measured and examined, and blood flow to the wound will be checked to determine why the wound is not healing. The wound will be cleaned and any dead skin and tissue will be removed to promote healing. Then the wound will be dressed to prevent infection and a treatment plan will be established.

This morning we will talk with Dr. LaScola about all aspects of wound care.

Our program covers the answers to these questions:

  1. What are some circumstances a patient would need to seek care from a wound center?

  2. What can cause a non healing wound?

  3. How long does it take a wound to heal?

  4. Do patients need a referral to visit Aultman Wound Care Center?

  5. What can a patient expect on first visit?

  6. What is debridement?

  7. What is hyperbaric oxygen treatment and what diagnoses is it used for?

  8. What is total casting and how can it benefit a patient with diabetic foot?

  9. What are skin substitutes and how do they work?

  10. Dr. Natalie LaScola DPM can be reached at 330-433-1258 and Aultman Wound Care Main Campus 330-363-4977
